Cupping as an Alternative to Acupuncture

Cupping came into many people’s awareness after the 2016 Olympics when Michael Phelps displayed the telltale circular red marks on his back. Since then, many others have displayed similar marks as cupping became more well known. Cupping has always been a part of Chinese Medicine and is used for many conditions. Most notably it is used for pain, which is what I will discuss here.

Cupping can be a great alternative to acupuncture. If a person is leery of needles and still wants relief from pain this is a very effective treatment. Cupping as the name implies is a cup-like device that either uses heat or external suction to create a vacuum when it is placed on the skin. It brings blood, lymph and body fluid to bring repair and healing to the affected area. Cups can also stretch and massage the muscles and connective tissue to break up muscle spasms and stagnation in the area to relieve pain.

Generally cupping causes no discomfort, however it can depend on the aggressiveness of the treatment. Many people might be concerned about the bruises that can occur. Usually, they are not painful and are caused by blood that has been brought to the surface and broken though the capillaries. Bruising does not always happen and depends on the strength of the suction and the constitution and condition of the individual. However, one must be prepared for that possibility.

Cupping can also be used like acupuncture to stimulate acupuncture points. It is typically done on the back, but can be done anywhere there are muscles if it is appropriate. It is a viable alternative to acupuncture and results can be as good as an acupuncture session in many cases.

If you would like to try cupping, I am offering cupping sessions for $50. This is a stand alone session and acupuncture is not included. This price is for current patients.

If you have not been in to see me before we will need to establish you as a patient with a health evaluation. The cost for this is $65. In some cases, cupping cannot be done and is contraindicated. We will establish this when you make your appointment.
